The runbook's check for "is any Glance image booting from this snapshot?" never matched anything.

block_device_mapping is a JSON string inside the image JSON, so its quotes arrive escaped as \". The old tr -d '\"' | grep pipeline left the backslashes in place, the snapshot_id: ? regex failed, and the command printed nothing. Empty output reads as "nothing references this snapshot", which is the unsafe answer.

The check now parses the field with jq and prints <image> <snapshot-id>. Verified against production on 2026-09-28: it prints gitborg-runner 4daabf1b-…. The old command printed nothing for the same image.

scripts/bake-runner-image.sh was not affected. It strips backslashes as well as quotes.

Docs only. No apply needed.
